About

Who we are

Shepherd Safety Systems designs, manufactures, and rents asset-to-enterprise technology that detects gas emissions in real time and links remote field operations and office locations to keep workers safe and minimize greenhouse gas emissions. Our people, technology, and practices help our clients achieve zero significant injuries and fatalities and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Based in Midland with yards in Pleasanton and Tatum, Texas, we currently support 35 U.S. onshore operators. The Shepherd Digital Gas Monitoring Ecosystem solution is being used in oil and gas operations today and may be deployed in other industries where detecting and preventing toxic and greenhouse gas emissions are a priority.

Shepherd Safety Systems Upgrades its Methane Emissions Technology and Services

StepUp* Methane Detection programs deliver higher risk reduction, cost savings, and environmental benefits to oil and gas companies.

MIDLAND, TEXAS (January 19, 2023) — Shepherd Safety Systems is introducing the StepUp* Methane Detection program, a significant upgrade to its methane emissions technology and services. The new program offers upstream and midstream oil and gas companies an all-in-one methane monitoring solution comprising system design, implementation, monitoring, and maintenance of named toxic gas detection sensors, personal wearable gas and GPS monitors, and real-time remote communications hubs.

Unlike aerial surveys that spot leaks at one point in time or ground-based continuous emissions monitoring systems that image plumes without equipment identification, Shepherd’s named point sensors on and around surface equipment pinpoint leaks and issue real-time alarms. Emission readings are recorded, monitored, and displayed via smartphones, PCs, or remote operating centers by equipment type and location to ensure office staff and field crews know exactly where leaks are occurring and the rate of emissions over time.

Shepherd CEO Seth Long commented, “With the StepUp Methane Detection program asset owners can pinpoint leaking equipment and assess emissions over time to prioritize LDAR and preventive maintenance programs and to fix leaks before they get reported by satellite or aerial surveys.”

A typical StepUp program use case is performing maintenance on leaking equipment and then looking back over past intervals to see if and when methane leaks recur with failing equipment or whether emissions are part of workover or scheduled maintenance programs. And because the Shepherd Digital Gas Monitoring Ecosystem™ technology bridges the gap between health, safety, and environment programs and departments, when emissions exceed a threshold, alerts for methane, LELs, or several other toxic gases are immediately sent to onsite and office personnel.

Reducing methane (CH4) emissions is a critical objective for oil and gas companies because methane is believed to have 80 times the warming impact of carbon dioxide over the first 20 years of being emitted into the atmosphere. Enhancing methane detection is an important risk reduction measure because methane leaks are odorless, colorless, flammable, and combustible. Shepherd toxic gas sensors help cut greenhouse gas emissions and prevent fire and other catastrophic events by providing continuous, pinpoint methane gas monitoring.

Case study

MIDLAND, TEXAS (May 13, 2022) — Shepherd has released a new case study revealing the benefits of utilizing the Shepherd Digital Gas Monitoring Ecosystem solution for methane gas monitoring and management. Methane gas leaks can be extremely costly for any E&P provider, resulting in regulatory fines, safety risk, increased operating costs, and a high emissions rate. In this study, one E&P company was looking for an opportunity to monitor, manage, and even reduce methane emissions, increasing the depth of monitoring levels and protecting the health and safety of team members.

The Shepherd Digital Gas Monitoring Ecosystem pinpointed methane releases in a production location. Gas leaks were discovered and reported in parts per million in real time, enabling the E&P operator’s team to quickly verify and repair emissions of ~100 Mscf/day.
